Leadership Academy

On Wednesday March 12th, 43 students from Waldport, Toledo, Newport and Angell Job Corps participated in PAADA’s 5th annual Youth Leadership Academy. PAADA seeks to increase the capacity of campus-based student leadership learning opportunities by offering trainings in the area of prevention.

PAADA sponsored Youth Leadership Academies began November 2012 with the goal of bringing together students from across Lincoln County and present a new opportunity for them to develop leadership skills and identify their ability to make a positive difference in their schools and communities.  Lincoln County Youth Leadership Academies one pager

The Leadership Academy events are an active corner stone in our organizations efforts to partner with schools, professionals, community and most importantly, the students. Over the past two years PAADA sponsored Youth Leadership Academies have proven to be a successful opportunity for providing training and ongoing connections for students in Lincoln County. This event has received the support and involvement from every school in the district including the Siletz and Eddyville charter schools and Angell Job Corps.

We had an excellent Youth Leadership Academy session on Tuesday.  Approximately 50 students participated.  One school (Toledo) had more students wanting to participate than we could accommodate, so we will be putting on a session just for them.  The break-out session that LCDR presented was a combined training and facilitation.  We introduced the session with a brief discussion of the difference between a polarized conflict approach and a collaborative approach.  Then we applied the concept by having the participants read some material about marijuana use and effects, then use a consensus approach to identify points that will be made in a letter of input to the parties in the legislature who will be developing a voter initiative.  We will work with a subgroup of the session to write the letter, and it will be sent.  This is one of the best examples of a group learning a concept and practicing related skills that i have ever been involved with.  Lots of opportunity to learn about problem definition and resolution.  And some great kids who made it work.

The 1st Leadership Academy for the 2013-2014 school year took place on Tuesday November 19th at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
